Adrian Says: William Faulkner Makes The Most Convoluted Stories Ever.

The final blog of the Hero's Journey arc, oh how we've come so far.  Throughout As I lay Dying , it is evident that the book travels through multiple perspectives, in no specific order. The question that I will be diving deep into this blog is can this type of narrative be considered as a hero's journey? In order to answer this question, let's look back at our journey on the hero's journey.  Vardaman and Addie being fishy So the hero's journey by Joseph Campbell has three main categories, separation, initiation, and return. As of writing this right now (11/18) we haven't reached that point where the characters of As I Lay Dying  return to the "return" category, so it will be hard to judge unless I decide to edit this to include all of the plot of the hero's journey. We somewhat have a separation and initiation building up but it is not quite evident. Seeing how 40% of the book is about Addie, the mother who had passed away, I will look at the ...

Adrian Says: Pixar made the Leidenfrost effect as a form of love

As I was wondering what films to write about because I don't want to critique any of Schmidt or Murdock's diagrams, I was thinking of old movies that featured female protagonists. However, I recently thought of many recent Disney and Pixar movies that also fit this genre. For this blog, I will be talking about one of Pixar's recent movies, Elemental. I highly advise that you watched the movie before or know most of the plot, because I try to summarize the parts that are present in Schmidt's heroine's journey diagram so some of it might not make a ton of sense if you have never heard of the movie before. Elemental (2023) Poster In the movie, we see the female protagonist, Ember who is represented as a fire person who lives in a town filled with other fire people that are secluded from other elements. Because Ember had always wanted to fulfill her father's wish that she would take over her father's store when he got older, Ember had never been outside of her h...

Adrian Says: It's Tangled not Rapunzel

Image
In the 2010 film, Tangled, we meet up with a princess (Rapunzel) who has lived their whole life in a tower because their parental figure (Gothel) tells them that the world outside the tower is very dangerous and it is only safe for Rapunzel to stay in the tower. Following Victoria Lynn Schmidtt's diagram of a heroine's journey, this is Rapunzel's illusion of the perfect world. While Rapunzel wants to explore the outside world, she is influenced by Gothel to stay in the tower because she believes it is a "safe place."      After a song and dance number, we meet another character named Flynn Rider (real name is Eugene, so I'll be using that name to reference him) who happens to steal a crown from a royal family and runs away with it. He finds Rapunzel's tower and climbs up it, hoping to have some safe shelter from the guards chasing after him. Instead he gets beat with a frying pan by Rapunzel and uses Eugene to prove to...

Adrian Says: "Kamala is the goddess we never knew we needed."

Image
Recently, we had just finished the book Siddhartha  and I think we can all agree that there are many signs of Joseph Campbell's 17-steps of the Hero's Journey present in Siddhartha. Now to not make this blog a whole recap of the 152 pages of Siddhartha, I'm going to focus on the Goddess/Temptress stage of the Hero's Journey. Now some of you might have had an image of Kamala appear the moment you read the words "goddess/temptress" and fortunately for you, you are correct.  This image of Kamala was taken from the 1972 Siddhartha Film      I'm going to focus on the scene where Siddhartha first met Kamala. Now in my eyes, I see this scene as both meeting with the goddess and woman as the temptress. Now some of you may have mixed opinions on this and for that I allow you to rant your thoughts under the comment section. Just make it family friendly please. Shifting back to the topic, the reason why I chose this important scene as both steps in the hero's...
